Shmu FM (pronounced shmoo) is Aberdeenís only full time community radio station.
Located in the Woodside area of Aberdeen, the station has established a new, free platform for communication for the most disadvantaged communities of north and central Aberdeen.
Shmu FM is part of Station House Media Unit (shmu), a community-managed, needs-led organisation whose mission is to contribute to social, economic and digital inclusion in its target communities by engendering personal development and community capacity building through participation in the
processes of community media production.
It is the only cross-platform community media resource of video and radio production, paper-based and on-line publications operating in Scotland.
Shmu FM launched on 20 October 2007 having secured a five year Ofcom Community Radio Licence and broadcasts on 99.8 FM and online at shmufm.net
Since its launch, the station has developed a diverse programme of live broadcasting which features local news, community profiles, radio plays, interviews, recordings of local bands and musicians, magazine-format shows and a good mix of informal chat and music.
The station, which currently broadcasts live 7 days a week from 7.00am until 12 midnight is managed by the volunteers themselves. Over 100 volunteers are involved every week in the output of the station, in a wide range of roles.
The volunteers are supported by a staff team that are part funded through a £317,000 award that the organisation secured through the Big Lottery. The commitment to community development means individuals and groups are supported and encouraged to get involved in every aspect of the creation, production and presentation of programmes that will enable them to contribute their views and
opinions on important local issues.
