Serving the community in Oban and surrounding area.
Oban FM is a community radio station based in Oban and broadcasting to much of North Argyll in the Highlands of Scotland by means of an ILR small-scale commercial radio licence.
The Oban FM 103.3 coverage footprint extends from Appin in the north to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull in the west to Taynuilt in the east and as far south as Kilninver.
The Oban FM group was founded in 1972 by Andy Campbell and Tom Laurenson working with a group of able volunteers who achieved much in a short time. Two short spells of broadcasting RSLs in 1992 and one in 1995 paved the way for an application to the then regulator Radio Authority for a full time licence.
The Oban FM applicant group won against competition in March 1996 and commenced transmissions to the Oban area on 103.3 FM on 15 July 1996.
Oban FM broadcasts daily from 8.00am to midday and in the evenings from around 5.00pm. Outwith these times, Oban FM takes a programme sustaining service from Radio Clyde 2 in Glasgow.
Oban FM programmes are produced by volunteers and the diversity of these programmes reflects the diversity of interests within the community.
The list includes Scottish country dance music and the classics, jazz and current pop, Celtic rock and big band sounds.
Oban FM holds an annual charity fundraising auction, Cash for Kids as well as the Big Live Auction Day and Gala Dinner. Activities have been extended to two days to enable more of the generous people in the community to be involved in fund raising for the kids. All the monies raised locally are spent locally.
